Imagine sitting in a circle with Mother Theresa, Buckminster Fuller, and Amelia Earhart, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Georgia O’Keefe and asking burning questions you have about life. Napoleon Hill in Laws of Success tells a story of a close personal friend who went to bed each night calling a wisdom council and speaking with each personally chosen member about the qualities he admired in them. He wanted those qualities in his own life.
In the Meditative Council exercise used, during a year long training program, class members choose a wisdom characters. One person gets to be YOU. Several people sit in a circle each representing someone such as Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, or Socrates. Identified as these figures, they are asked questions like “Is there hope for the world when there is such violence and disregard for the dignity of life.” As a group, these people are using intuition and visualization to draw upon the Laws of Success and the wisdom of all the sages.
From an ordinary person in the circle comes the response of an oracle. “As long as there is heart, there is hope.”
Chill bumps ripple among the participants as we hear each other draw deeply on wisdom we did not know we had. You too can draw on that deep inner wisdom accessible to each of us. Imagination and visualization, meditation, contemplation and prayer are some ways to access this wisdom. Intuition and the use of imagination and visualization are tools used by successful people to tap the Laws of Success.

Why isn’t this wisdom available all the time? Personality behavior patterns camouflage our true nature. This is one obstacle to using the Laws of Success. Imaginary wisdom councils used in Psychosynthesis training evoke the experience of knowing one’s deeper self. Those who are successful educate themselves through their own experience to draw forth the qualities so necessary in using the Laws of Success.
How do we connect to the core of our being to navigate our life and relationships with joy and wisdom? Psychosynthesis proposes concepts and practices to draw forth our essence and demonstrate it in the world. These principles are vital to understanding the Laws of Success.
Coordinating the personality, accessing the soul and acting with soul in the world are key teachings developed by Roberto Assagioli, an Italian psychiatrist and contemporary of Freud and Jung. He called this process Psychosynthesis, (opposed to psychoanalysis) a blending of body, heart, mind and soul. The ” I” is the observer and the director of self. A well developed “I” that can choose and direct is necessary for all the Laws of Success. A mature “I” can separate itself from the strangleholds of fear, doubt, uncertainty, shame, guilt and procrastination. Coordinating the personality is complex. Using the metaphor of an orchestra might help illustrate this process. The musical instruments are roles and behaviors like mother, father, child, worker, gardener, rebel, judge and mystic. Whenever they play their own score, disregarding the needs and wants of each other or the whole, we have the cacophony that resounds as an orchestra is warming up before a concert. We need a conductor to make music. Those people who become successful, joyous, and prosperous have learned to coordinate their personality to fully use the Laws of Success.
Many parts of ourselves were created in response to things that happened as we grew up. We made decisions and conclusions about those events. We developed a whole set of beliefs and frame of mind for each aspect. These aspects can seem to have contradictory ways of seeing the world. The Adult You may embrace the Laws of Success. The Cynic or Judge may view the Laws of Success as crap.
Often we allow circumstance to evoke a part of self, who subtly takes charge of our awareness. We then see the world, make choices, and act from the perspective of that aspect of ourselves who is in no way the totality of who we are. When we respond without choice to the outside world, or to thoughts of the past, we are not able to successfully use the Laws of Success.

THE CONDUCTOR: THE “I”:
Central to the Law of Success
Distilling the essence of self from the snarls and knots of “survival structures” of the personality is a dance of awareness, learning and skill. At the center of the personality is the “I,” a reflection of a larger Self. The “I” has the ability to be aware, to be an observer and to take action on awareness. When the “I” is in charge, we can become masters at the Laws of Success, and live joyous, prosperous lives of wellbeing.
This observer/chooser self becomes the conductor of our orchestra. When John’s essence was not seen or heard as a child, he developed a pleaser pattern to get approval. Angie chose to regard authorities with disdain and created a rebel. These inner actors are driven by unmet needs and wants. If these personality patterns are in charge, we are subject to reaction to circumstances at all times. This is not helpful when implementing the Laws of Success.
POWER OF THE LAWS OF SUCCESS
Freeing the awareness and choice of the “I” from the molasses swamp of our inner cast of characters is the first step of coordinating the personality. Psychosynthesis uses the disidentification /identification exercise to call forth “the I.” Identification with this central aspect of our personality is a powerful way to harness the Laws of Success.
When practiced repeatedly it enhances the observer self’s awareness and strengthens the capacity of choice. The exercise reminds us that we have a multifaceted nature but that we are not only our body or our feelings, mind, child or judge. It affirms “I am I, a center of pure awareness and choice. From center I can see and direct my actions.” Being a witness or observer of self and choosing to act through conscious choice are very important to facilitate the Laws of Success.
THE COMPOSER: ACCESSING SELF (SOUL)
The Higher Aspects of the Laws of Success
A part of who we are, is a place inside us where we connect with God, Source, Higher Power – use whatever term fits for. Accessing this place (Napoleon Hill refers of Infinite Intelligence) is one of the basic purposes of Psychosynthesis. This place is crucial when using the Laws of Success. Being In Tune With the Infinite facilitates the successful use of the Laws of Success.
Releasing the energy of the Self allows soul to become a source of inner guidance, strength, wisdom, joy, love and purpose. The essential Self or true Self (sometimes called Soul) is more than the personality self. The “I“ is a mirror reflection of this true Self – but more closely related to the personality. The “I” is helpful to connect with Self and to engage in actively using the Laws of Success.
ASSETS OF SELF USED IN LAWS OF SUCCESS
From this Self we discover purpose, experience meaning and make contributions. Self allows us to know our interconnectedness with others and all life. The attributes of wonder, joy, curiosity, and nobleness, appreciation of beauty, intuition, creativity and artistic impulses come from the Self. Roberto Assagioli called this area of our Being our superconscious. Compassion, Intuition, Creativeness, Determination, and Purpose are qualities that are developed when we are using the Laws of Success.
This Self, whom we can call the Composer, does not impose its will on the orchestra, but awaits our willingness to pick up the music, practice and embody rhapsody. If we don’t open the music, our Self nudges, reminding that music is there for the playing. When we are sounding the music of Self, we are in tune with the Laws of Success.
The Soul or Self however you wish to name it is always available to us every moment of every day. It is always connected with The Infinite at all times. We can open to guidance from God or Infinite Intelligence at any time through the medium of Self.
Doing so enhances our ability to comply with the Laws of Success.
HOW TO ACCESS SELF IN LAWS OF SUCCESS
Prayer, Meditation, Contemplation, Visualization, and Listening to the Quiet are all ways to align ourselves with the highest parts of ourselves. These are powerful avenues when using the Law of Success. When we pray, align, quiet the mind, and move beyond the body and the emotions and day to day concerns, we can enter a state of Beingness that is permeated with wellbeing. That State of Beingness is essential to those who are putting into action the Laws of Success.
DO or BE: BOTH ARE VITAL IN THE LAWS OF SUCCESS
Beingness is essential; however it is not enough to connect with our Soul. Action in the world is necessary. Doing is also important. Inspired Doing is the best kind of Doing, for inspired doing is aligned with the Laws of Success. Here’s a tip to help remember this paradox which is part of the Laws Success. Bringing the music of the Soul into the world requires cooperation and harmonizing between these different members of the orchestra. Achieving a pleasing Personality is one of the Laws of Success.
If the raucous trombone bellows at colleagues when annoyed with their lack of progress, then the quiet serenity of the flute that sees the needs of the whole group is missed. The “I” as conductor makes a space for each to play his or her song and has the choice of what music to perform. To Inspire Teamwork, Law of Success Number Twelve, we must inspire the teamwork between our inner players, as well as inspire teamwork with the people with whom we work in the outside world.
Coordinating all the members of the inner orchestra to participate with their unique attributes is a factor of those who practice the Laws of Success. Finding ways each part can perform their solos, and yet maintaining the integrity of a finely coordinated musical repertoire is helpful for those who are practicing the Laws of Success. The people who have prospered from the Laws of Success have leaned how to use all aspects of themselves.
CHOICE: AN ALL IMPORTANT KEY IN THE LAWS OF SUCCESS
Choice becomes a sacred act as we learn to coordinate the multitudinous voices within. Inspired by the Infinite we learn more about relating positively in our external relationships. Implementing the Laws of Success requires Choice again and again. Laws of Success Number Six: Create Personal Initiative. Choice is an integral part of Initiative.
USE COSMIC HABITFORCE: Laws of Success Number Seventeen
Developing the fine art of choice and coordinating the diverse aspects of self in order to bring soul into the world can becomes a spiritual practice. Unlearning outgrown ways of reacting that no longer serve us; others or a greater community allows us to relearn how to reconnect with the deep wisdom that wells up from the Soul. This is a part of the secret for practicing the Laws of Success.
We learn how to be better partners, parents, artists and gardeners of the soil of our experience as we practice. The Soul may sound its Song as we play The Laws of Success with all aspects of ourselves connected to the greater Whole.
