Appearances Are Deceiving

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Appearances are remarkably deceptive. I came over a rise, and there before me so powerful, so awe-inspiring, so breathtaking, was Mount Rainier. I caught my breath. One sweet sun lit morning, driving through the University District, the road made a long incline down. Coming from behind the treeline, across the channel, was the appearance of this magnificent mountain. It was huge and luminescent.

Whenever I am out, I watch for the Mountain. Seeing the Mountain is a gift for the day. I have found certain places while driving that Mt. Rainier is visible. The higher the elevation where I am, the more of Mr. Rainier I can see.

When the overcast or the clouds are too thick I can’t see the Mountain. From appearances, the mountain is gone. Sometimes the overcast is there and one would assume from appearances that the mountain is not visible; but you can see the Mountain perfectly. Sometimes the day is incredibly clear, but a thin veil of clouds clings to the Mountain. Appearances are very deceiving. Yesterday, I drove across the Snohomish River Valley. It was beautifully clear and there to the south, I could see Mount Rainier. My heart sang. I love seeing The Mountain. It has a powerful presence.

Preoccupied in thought, I once drove right through my favorite viewing spot and didn’t look. I gasped and then looked diligently.

Looking for Mount Rainier has become a metaphor for me. Appearances would have me believe that the mountain is not there much of the time.

The Truth of the mountain’s existence is not dependent upon whether I can see it. My capacity to see the mountain (the appearance) is dependent upon how high I am, where I am in relationship to trees, what the weather is, what direction I am facing, and if I happen to be looking or not. My “what is” regarding Mount Rainier has no correlation to the greater Reality of that mountain. Even when conditions have the appearance of not being conducive, the mountain can be seen.

Conditions that we view in our life may seem to be reality; the “what is” of our current life. Conditions are like the weather however, they constantly change. If we focus only on the “what is” in our life, we never view the greater Reality. Appearances are deceiving. I may seem to be unemployed right now, but I am working at one contract, I am in consideration for three positions, I have a phone interview coming up. I just finished a temporary assignment where I did not get the job I applied for. However the employer reviewed resumes and asked me to come in and work with the person he hired to revamp part of his accounting. The greater Reality is not “I am unemployed.” The greater Reality is a wondrous activity of mixing and matching. I am considering building a business. It’s a creative forming time.

When we focus on our “what is” we create more of what we think we see. What we focus on affects our state and our vibrational emission. Law of Success and Law of Attraction suggest that we focus not on our “what is” but on what we want to bring into our life. Focusing on appearances is not helpful. Focusing on the Reality that we are Creating is far more beneficial.
