Victim No More

Monday, October 10th, 2016

With it the decision arrived that I will be victim no more.

“And a resolve so bone deep that it seared out all the hopelessness and despair and left complete resolve that I will live my life differently no matter what the circumstances. Now that is resolution I want you to know. And although my diseases are still active, I am happy. Bone Deep happy. And I intend to stay that way no matter what.”

That’s how my last post ended. I wrote it Sept 16, 2016. Resolve is a powerful thing. Its going to take a book to write about how I arrived at that place of resolve. But I want to share it with you. It is so important.

My food plan is going great. Rarely am I really tempted to eat something off my plan. It’s called the AutoImmune Protocol. Very interesting and great. I am eating good meat and seafood, cooked vegetables, and fruit. Anything else is no go: no dairy, no nuts, no grains, no eggs, no nightshade (like tomatoes and potatoes). Here’s what’s happening. My lung and sinus symptoms are a bit better. My colitis – just barely some incremental improvement. But I am have so much more energy I am blown away. My memory has improved significantly, very little fatigue, very little pain, and I plan to go a few more months on this plan until my body has reset it self. My goal was to reduce inflammation in my body.

I had just started on this new food plan, when I had that horrible awful no good day out of which was born this bone deep resolve. The resolve is carrying me through wild times. I have been on six pet sitting gigs, which means I have moved six times since I last wrote. And I have to carry my new foodstuffs around with me. Arrowroot powder, carob powder, olive oil, coconut oil are some things I move because I need to cook all my food. Eating out could mean I might eat something not on my plan (like sugar)!

Now I have not been a cooking person. And I’m learning to love cooking for myself. I love finding the challenge of how to have a pizza when you can’t have any of the traditional flours. It’s possible. Just look online for AIP pizza and there’s someone who has found a recipe. So I have had lots of challenges with my time, and I am staying true to my resolve.

My intuition is kicking in big-time. I decided to write a book about this journey. I have a lot of skills that are valuable, and knowledge from walking in these shoes. “Coping with autoimmune disease”s is my working title. As I have gotten excited about writing, I had this incredible thought, what if autoimmune diseases are related to people who are highly sensitive? Guess what. There’s a big correlation!!!!!!!!!!

So off I jaunted in my research, and got one of the biggest epiphanies of my adult life. Part of what Elaine Afron talks about in The Highly Sensitive Person is the arousal of the nervous systems of people who have this temperament. I have always been told “You are too much.” “You are too ‘big’ in your energy.” You laugh too loud, you cry too loud, why can’t you be steady as a rock like most people. When you come into the office, its like a whirlwind happens. You really impact people too much with who you are. Calm down, be normal, be quiet, be thoughtful.” And more of those kinds of gems (roll of the eyes). And this was never about my behavior, this was always about the personhood of me. (so it felt).

When I was working on my master’s degree in human development, I specifically targeted a population that I wanted to work with. I wanted to work with Adults who have the same temperament as I do. Back then I was studying with Linda Budd Ph.d who wrote “Living with the Active Alert Child.” These are some of the coolest people in the world (as are the highly sensitive people), but they also have some big challenges. Think Bill Clinton, Jane Fonda, and you can kind of get a feeling for what they might be like.

So both the Active Alerts and the Highly Sensitive People receive enormous amount of negative feedback both because of their behavior, and their being-ness. Each temperament claims about 20% of the population, and it will be fascinating to see if they are subsets of each other.

When I studied Active Alerts, I knew that I could get really challenged by being in groups, because I didn’t have some of the screens that lots of people do to screen out incoming stimuli. What happens when all that stimuli gets in, it just floods the body, setting the body into alert status. The world does not feel safe. Cortisol floods the system as does adrenalin, and away we go. I just had not put it together that the arousal of my everyday life was creating nervous system overload. What I called earlier – arousal. Big thing to find out.

So of course you can guess what happened, when I got this epiphany and all the excitement of seeing my whole life and my life’s work beginning to emerge. I hit overload and overwhelm. Typical of overloaded arousal. This, I am sure, is what wears down people’s immune system.

After a weekend of being in the overload soup, I remembered!!!! Once again I am feeling victimized by my own nervous system. What crap!  Literally (laughing out loud – with colitis – well that’s more information that you need on this blog).

As soon as I recognized that, I immediately calmed down and began remembering all kinds of techniques I can use to calm my system and myself down.

So I have learned an enormous amount about me, my relationship with my body has changed, and finally I see a way to find a population who wants my work and needs it desperately, and who I understand very well, so I feel I am finally moving into my own, and my own’ life purpose.  Part of it is to heal myself. Part of it is to show others that it is possible.  I have created a Facebook Group where you can chat with me called “Success Factors.” Please drop by and chat. And like this page please. We are in wonderful times of change. Let’s do it.

I will be victim no more. That’s a resolution. Wherever I feel like a victim, it shows up, and now my illness points me directly to it.

So now my illness has become my best ally. And I have no doubt and all confidence that this new path will take me to success beyond my wildest dream.

Resolve

Monday, September 19th, 2016

This has been a year of strong transitional movement. I know a lot of people who are challenged. As these waves of energy cascade, I have had strong reactions and sometimes felt at the mercy of forces beyond my control. Yet there are huge signs of transformation.

The Kiln

This has been a wild year, painful and intense, deeply fatiguing, and finally freeing. I have been terrified that 3 people I hold dear would die. And my sweet 33 year old Melissa did die. The brother to whom I am closest in age has had a heart that has been in flutter for over 16 months. He came to visit in June, and I was grateful to see him one more time.

My own health has been compromised as my two autoimmune disorders have flared and I can’t get them settled down.

Out of all the heat in the kiln of life, I find myself resolving to find a yet new way to live. While I have been saying that my health has been a top priority this last year, my actions have been to keep pushing me just a little further, to keep keeping on because I said I would do it, or I felt compelled to get that task done. I wasn’t always the driver of my own bus (one of my inner family or emotions was- click for more info). Sometimes impatience, and a need to get something accomplished drove my bus, not my more wise patient, compassionate self.

Have you noticed there are lots of people who are being challenged? When in a time where we have no control of the outside forces we can feel hopeless. Not so in charge of my inside forces these past months, it has been a time for me to stop.

The Fire

A sequence of circumstances brought me to a standstill. It took first intense anger to propel me to an inner place where I could allow the intense anger to morph into resolve. I was preparing for a colonoscopy (which I have done many times). They are not pleasant, but I had my tried and true method to get through the preparation. This time it didn’t work. This time my body had a violent reaction to the 12 hours forced cleansing. As I began recovering, I hit pure fury at the inhumane process.

But it turns out that what was inhumane, was my continual pushing my body to perform physical tasks far beyond its capability. So the fury I felt at the medical profession was a mirror to the fury that my body felt to being forced to be a slave to my will. In my imagination, my body was acting like a dog on a leash that finally laid down and would not walk any further because it had no more energy to give.

So no matter my outside commitments or my desires to do those things, I have had to stop.

Immediate Feedback

My body has such a state of depletion that it cannot restore itself. So it is giving me signals. If this doesn’t work for me, then I bleed. If I eat the wrong food, I bleed. If I get stressed, I bleed, if I get over-tired, I bleed. In real time, within the hour, my body gives me red feedback.

When I am this depleted, I am not really giving to others, when I do something that I said I would do. I don’t have the cushion of finess when I talk. I have been at a number of committee meeting, and as I would say my truth, it shaved off their skin as my words whistled by because what I saw and said was delivered with such intensity. That’s not a give to anyone.

So I am having to say no sometimes to things I think would give to me. I had to say no to going to a 4 day training that was two states away. Too much travel and too intense a schedule, my body could not do it. Last night at the last minute, I chose not to go to Chorus practice (I love singing) because I was too tired. When I signed up for chorus this season, I told myself I would just go when I felt really good, and wouldn’t go when I don’t, and if that means I don’t sing in the final concerts, then that’s what it means.

Phoenix Rising

But there is real transformation at work in this time for me. Because I am forced with instant feedback to see what helps and what does not help, I am able to make life changing choices.

I resolved changing the things I can. I resolve to eat on an Autoimmune Food Protocol. Some people put their diseases into remission and even heal themselves. I have the will power and the resolution to stay on that plan.

Eliminating stress is another thing I can change. How? I’m taking a sabbatical from things that create stress for me. I’m re-reading a book called “How We Choose to Be Happy – The 9 choices of Extremely Happy People-their secrets, their stories.” This is a way that “truly happy people make conscious decisions about how they will confront life’s challenges. In the face of sometimes overwhelming circumstances, they create happiness by making the same nine internally driven choices.”

Summary

So I have told you about my horrible, no good awful year 🙂 (like Alexander’s No good, horrible awful day – a delightful children’s book).

I’ve told you a basic response that came out of the pain, fatigue, and feeling powerlessness.

Fury came. Fury delivered the emotional energy that I could morph into resolve.

With it the decision arrived that I will be victim no more.

And a resolve so bone deep that it seared out all the hopelessness and despair and left complete resolve that I will live my life differently no matter what the circumstances. Now that is resolution I want you to know. And although my diseases are still active, I am happy. Bone Deep happy. And I intend to stay that way no matter what.

Be Clear About What You Want: The Key to New Year Vision Board

Tuesday, January 05th, 2016

As I  review my vision board from last year,  I want to be much clearer this coming year about my vision or my goal. To stay in Flow, you need to know where you are going.  Directionality is helpful to the Universe to deliver what it is that you want. Building a business? Then you have to be clear. “I want my number of clients to double this year.”

Let’s look at an example. I want to have much better health this year. There are many small steps I need to take to get better health. Dancing, walking, drinking lots of water, leaving sugar out of my diet, getting enough sleep, taking my medications every day, and doing the protocols that my doctors have given me every day is an important step. I need to have the intention of getting more well, I need to vision and imagine my lungs, my digestive system, my bones and muscles, my body getting more fit.

Last year, I didn’t have enough specificity on my vision board about health.  I did stop a lot of stress by reducing my reactivity to people and situations.  That really helped.  I went ten months with having almost no sugar. I lost weight (a side benefit). I look much better.  So I made progress.

Health area is top right pie

There are other ways I need more progress.  I want to expand my beliefs to KNOW that much better health is possible (I am watching movies like “The Living System,” “You Can Heal Your Life,” “Awake,” “What the Bleep.”)  I want to be open to the Miracle of Life and Mystery. I want my lungs to be clear, vibrant, able to breathe deeply.

Knowing what you want (with the specific steps you can take), gives your unconscious, the universe, and the universal genies the pictures of what you would like to create in your life.  Then it sends you all kinds of synchronicities and opportunities to help you move in that direction.

Last year I had the simple word Dance on my vision board. My pulmonary doctor told me that dance would be very good for me. So with fierce intentionality, I have been going dancing, and taking waltz lessons.  I love it. It is fun, and it is helping me build a healthier body. Last night I began my intermediate waltzing class. It was dark, cold, but my intention blazed and kept me going and I never even thought about staying home.  Now I want to have that same intentionality about the other things that will give me much better Health.

I have used Health as an illustration 0f one area in my life where I am building fierce intentionality. I am going to post a picture of what last’s year’s vision board looked like. I will take the whole month of January, if I need it, to get even clearer about the topics that I am giving myself as goals for this coming year.

Burning Goals

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

Goals that help us Burn for Success

Goals that burn inside help us to success. I was inspired a couple of weeks ago to look at goals in a new way. I think a new way of defining a goal is vital to being successful in your life. But first let’s refresh our understanding about goals and desires. Burning Desires converted to Burning Goals give a direction to creating our lives. How are desires and goals critical to success? We have to have something to shoot for. It allows us to ask for what we want from the Universe. And then we get to live it, refine it, or shoot for a new goal.

The Power of Aim

We need to aim in a direction. Dreams, Desires, Goals, Visions, and Life Missions are ways we aim ourselves and our lives. Dreams, Desires, Goals, Vision and Mission also serve to fuel our progress towards the goal. So Goals set a direction, and Burning Goals help fuel our motion towards that Desire.

Two Types of Goals
When we want to be successful, we might want to have very specific goals to ensure our success. Vishen Lakhiani of Finer Minds has identified two types of goals. He says there are two types of goals; means goals and end goals. His recent video describes how easily we get seduced by means goals that society tells us will give us the feelings we want. He says

“End goals are the end result of being human. End goals are about experiencing love, traveling around the world, being truly happy, contributing to the planet and learning new skills.

Means goals are stuff that society tells us we need to have in place to get to happiness, like getting a good GPA, Getting into a good college, getting into a particular firm, being with one particular someone. Getting a good review at work. Money is a means goal.”

The secret to move your life forward towards what you want is identifying your end goals.

Three Important Questions
Vishen says that we can separate everything we want in life (which are end goals) into three buckets; Experiences, Growth and Contributions. To focus on these, he asks three very important questions that can help us identify these aims.

What do we want to Experience before we die?
How do we want to Grow in this lifetime?
What Do we want to contribute back to the planet while we are here?

These three questions are critical to creating lives that are happy and fulfilled according to Vishen. Vishen takes you through a short exercise to identify these end goals in his video which you can watch at Finer Minds on Goals.

Contrast gives us feedback for new goals
The times we are in are pushing us out of our comfort zone. These times are giving us the opportunity (perhaps even pushing us a bit) to look at what we really want in life. These are very exciting times, and can be quite uncomfortable as well. Our discomfort can be very useful in highlighting what we don’t want. When we turn that into a question of “Well what is it I do want?” we feel burning desire that helps us create what we do want. Now we have a goal that we do want that we can shoot for.

Often however, we have identified a means goal which has burning properties. We want to have a certain car, camera, house, or we want more money, because we are so worried about the bills. The problem is that we get so obsessed with these means goals that we forget the end goals.

To make end goals have a burning quality about this, to give us the propulsion power we need, we can look at the burning desire that comes out of the contrast from what our experience currently is and what we want our experience to be. If we are incredibly stressed about money, making the rent or mortgage payment, finding a job, we have to figure out a way to rename our desire in a way that moves us towards our end goal. Perhaps we want the freedom to work in our own company that contributes to people and provides a bountiful life to us and our family.

In my current occupation, I move around a lot. Out of that experience comes a new end goal. I fervently want a home base that allows me to write and contribute. Curiously enough, my past goal was to travel and to have the freedom to paint and write. I asked and I received. I have been writing, and I have been traveling, and I have had the freedom from structure. Now I find I need a little more structure that a home base would give me. And I want it fiercely. I need it for my health. I need it to be able to produce effectively and I need it because of how it will support and give to me.

The universe heard what I asked for, and gave it to me. I have had three years of living like a nomad (to counter those 30 years of being rooted in the upper Midwest). I fiercely wanted it and I received it. It came in a different form that I visualized it, but I received the lifestyle I asked for. Out of these years of traveling, came the experience of packing and moving several times a month. I don’t like that. That’s the contrast highlighting what I don’t like. Now I use what I don’t like to get clearer about what I do want, so that I can ask the Universe to deliver More Please of what I do want. See how it works?

When the discomfort of moving got intense enough, the discomfort gave me a new burning goal. Which fuels the next ask and receive cycle. Of course my making myself bad and wrong for asking for such a lifestyle certainly has slowed things down, but now that I am back on track, I know that I will receive a breakthrough shortly.

Summary
We have life experience. When we are uncomfortable, we are in our juiciest place of creation. From what we really don’t like, we can create a burning desire or goal. That desire or goal is the form that we give to the creation which is our life. We ask for this from the Universe. The Universe and our higher self collaborates. Situations and circumstances get drawn into our life. I asked for a traveling, nomad lifestyle of writing. It took a bit but I received it.

When we live in this new experience, as I did in my three years of traveling and writing, we get more grist for the mill by the contrast that comes out of our experience. We get to refine our goal, dream or desire, to more accurately reflect what we want. Then we ask, let go, and receive again. It’s the continual dance of creation.

Blessing to you as you identify your own life goals. Go listen to the 13 minute video by Vishen. Continue to build those lists of end goals. Below are some resources to reflect more on dreams, vision, and burning desire.

Burning Desire

Sunday, July 24th, 2011

Burning Desire is an absolute must in order for your desire to come into existence. Burning desire is the first step in manifesting what you want according to Napoleon Hill. Hill wrote Think and Grow Rich right after the Great Depression. He said that the Depression taught us humility, and open-mindedness and opened lots of OPPORTUNITIES. His words are just as true today. What we are experiencing world wide is giving all of us the opportunity to really revisit our burning desires, because now is a time when those desires and dreams can come true. Perhaps not, however, in the old way.

Burning Desire is the first step in the process of Think and Grow Rich. He said that Dreams are the seedlings of your future. Desires have been given negative connotation by our culture, referring to lust, or saying that your desires are never a necessity. Balderdash! Your desires come from the deepest place in yourself. The desires for which you feel a real passion are coming from the Self in you that needs to be expressed as Life flowing through you.

“Be practical, be realistic, don’t dream” say many voices both inside ourselves and people in the ouside world. That’s a surefire recipe for failure to live to your fullest. I have found that our dreams are fragile, and that many people have wrapped away their dreams in such cocoons, that they can’t even remember them because they listen to these skeptical voices. Cocooning and forgetting our dreams contracts you into a smaller and smaller person. We smother the embers of our desires when we forget our dreams.

It may be that you have to take a while to recover your dreams. Read Recognize and Accept Your Dreams for some ways to revisit and recover those dreams. Although not on the list, treasure maps are another possibility. New Year for me is a time when I make a giant poster of my desires, goals, aims for the coming year. I go through magazines, and clip out words, headlines, and beautiful graphics and photos that I may include. This year I made one, and then I needed to make a second treasure map, because I had an epiphany at the end of the year. I had been feeling down, not very energetic, and just the tiniest bit of a victim, and even though I worked very hard, and moved twice last fall, I was really hard on myself. My epiphany came while I sat in the dentist office, waiting for the removal of the last three ‘silver’ (read mercury) fillings. September through December I had over 16 fillings removed and replaced with enamel. The mercury was running havoc on my body.

As I waited to be called into the dentist’s office, I read about the process. There in black and white, were the words that while the fillings are being removed, mercury contamination might be felt more strongly. What if the depression, the energyless state I had been in, the physical feeling bad was not emotional at all, but simply a by-product of having all those fillings removed? My critic had been hard at me.

So I vowed then and there that this year I would work on Self Love, Self Acceptance, and Self Confidence. So another treasure map was created with beautiful pictures, and wonderful words “I love myself.” “Life is Good and getting Better.” By the time I finished creating my map, I had a burning desire to treat myself with the kindness and consideration that I would afford a friend.

What a powerful year it has been. This whole year has been full of gifts, insights, and processes that are helping me exactly to move toward the achievement of that burning desire. Not all of them are pleasant, but the contrast between what I desired and what I was experiencing helped fuel the intensity of the burning desire even more. ‘Contrast’ is a marvelous experience to compel our desires to emerge says Abraham. Contrast is when you are experiencing what you don’t want. It helps you get clear on what you do want.

For the longest time as I read and reread Napoleon Hill, I didn’t know what my desires were. For sure they did not feel like burning desires. These years of reading and studying the laws of success and the law of attraction has taught me that I need to be aware of my dreams, fuel them with burning desire, and turn them into burning goals. Those are the keys to laws of success.

If you can conceive of a desire, wish for it, dream of it, and then it truly can come true for you. The laws of the universe decree it so.

New Year Resolutions and Vision Boards

Friday, December 31st, 2010

New Year Resolutions often are used by those who practice Law of Success.  It is a time of beginnings.  It is the time that we Resolve to try to do our best.  We set goals. We produce images of the future.  It is a powerful time.

Most of us do not comprehend the power that we invoke when we make New Year Resolutions.  Instead, we hear the internal chatter of how it won’t work, and how most people never follow through on their Resolutions.  But there is great power in New Year Resolutions.

First it is a time when all of us are contemplating the future instead of only stewing about our present or past.  So there is a huge mental mind field that is created by many people thinking about possibilities.  There is no other time in the entire year that holds so much energy and intention about the future, held by so many.

Second.  There is real optimism present in that group think, and it is contagious.  We all can touch into our optimism.

Third.  We give ourselves freedom to dream, and we set goals, both realistic and unrealistic.  It may be to take up some form of exercise, to boost our sales to a new high, look for a job we love, write that book, meet the love of our life, or take karate lessons.

Fourth.  We invoke some of our most potent powers.  Imagination. Creativity, Focus, and Will.  We clear our minds of chatter and imagine a future when we are thin, prosperous, loved, and contribute to the greater good.  Resolve is one of the attributes of Will.  When we say, “I resolve that I will take up an exercise program”, we are invoking that personal will in a powerful way to serve our desire, dreams, and goals.

Fifth:  The way we make these New Year Resolutions is important.  When we write them down, we give these Resolves incredible potency. When we add creativity to these Resolves by making pictures, making a Treasure Map, making a poster of the dreams we want to come true, we are bringing the genies of the universe together to bring to us what we want, because we have such clear images. This is an intense version of the 17 seconds process. Last year I made a vision board also called a treaure map – which is a poster with pictures and goals made out of clippings from magazines.  I wanted to meet a romantic partner, and the pictures that I clipped out all had boats in them.  I did meet a man, and he looked very much like the pictures I had pasted on my board, and his goal was to live on a boat.

Years ago, I made such a vision board/treasure map and I included pictures of places where I might want to visit, and some words and pictures to reflect professional writing.  Later that year, I made a presentation at an international conference on a topic that I had been writing about professionally.  I stopped on the way to visit an old friend in Oregon.  She took me down the Columbia Gorge to Multnomah Waterfalls.  Later when I looked back at my poster, I realized that a photo of that exact waterfall was on that poster.

One law of success guru made such a vision board/treasure map and included a photo of a house to represent his deep desire to live in an beautiful modern affluent home.  Years passed.  He moved.  While unpacking, he ran into the old chart, and his son asked him what it was.  There on that poster was a magazine photo of the exact home that he had just moved into.  Gave me chills to hear his story.

So there is much power in making New Year Resolutions.  The follow-through is also important, because very few of us have received real training about how to muster our attention in the days and weeks that follow.  It is a process.

We will address some of those issues in the following posts.  Today, have fun.  Gather some magazines and clip out words and images that makes your heart sing.  Glue them to a poster. Make your own vision board and treasure map for the coming year.

We  here at OfSuccessLaw.com wish you days of joy and an abundance of prosperity and success.

For a lovely story about the outcome of my last two year’s of vision boards, see Meditation and Manifestation.
