The Secret Key to Law of Success #9 is to channel self-discipline. Self-Discipline is the avenue through which you direct the flow of your personal power for success. Many people do not know how to self-discipline. Others do not want to learn how to direct self in the form of self-discipline. If you had or have a problem with authority figures, you probably have a problem with authority over yourself as well. Different aspects of self can run you ragged away from success, if you don’t develop the mature adult “self.” Every act you make of self-discipline will help you develop your mature self which takes you toward success. The most astounding power you have is a function called “Will.” It gives you’re the power to choose and the power to act. It is essential, the secret key to Law of Success. Self-Discipline is just one way to describe the practice of developing your capacity to choose and act; your will.

Napoleon Hill diagramed six departments of the self to be coordinated by self-discipline – the secret key to Law of Success # 8.

    1. Ego – Seat of Willpower – he called it the Supreme Court over all the other departments of the minds, saying its seat of power is in the subconscious mind.
    2. Faculty of the emotions – seat of action-power of the mind.
    3. Faculty of reason – seat of judgment and opinions.
    4. Faculty of Imagination – origin of imagination.
    5. Faculty of Conscience – the moral guide.
    6. Memory – keeper of the records of the mind.


Roberto Assagioli
and Carl Jung describe similar functions of the self. The Myers Briggs Personality Inventory is based on this theory. You will see on the following diagram that thought, emotions, imagination, intuition, impulse-desire, and sensations are the six functions of the person. At the core is the self – or the “I.” Will is the energy with which we can coordinate all the functions, rather than have them use us. Will is the central function of self-discipline – an essential ingredient to using the secret key to the Law of Success.

Napoleon Hill suggested the “sixth sense” of Telepathy which is the broadcasting station of the brain – connecting with other brains. He called the subconscious section of the mind as the connecting link between the mind of men and Infinite Intelligence. Telepathy or Intuition is one avenue of the secret key to the Law of Success. It is the way the Universe connects like minds and brings together opportunities. To be receptive to intuition requires use of self-discipline to quiet the mind and feelings and senses. The practice of prayer and meditation are ways self-discipline is used to tap into Infinite Intelligence.

Athletes harness their enormous power through the use of exercising and training their body through the use of their personal will; self-discipline. They are just one example of how the personal function of the will can be used to mobilize the self toward personal achievement of success. These people utilize self-discipline, the secret key to Law of Success #8.
