The Secret Key to Law of Success #8
Develop Controlled Enthusiasm

The Secret key to Law of Success #8 is to develop controlled enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is to success and positive mental attitude like gasoline is to an engine. In today’s market where fuel prices have skyrocketed, we are tending to make more conscious choices of how we use that fuel. We want to use enthusiasm in a way that supports Law of Success.

Napoleon Hill says “In working with your PMA (positive mental attitude), you will learn to control your mind. The same control can be used on your enthusiasm, so that it is continually fed into the cylinders of your mental engine, where it is ignited by the spark of your definite purpose and explodes, pushing the pistons of applied faith and personal initiative.” The secret key to Law of Success is to develop enthusiasm to support your purpose and action plan.

Enthusiasm is power. It is contagious. It with faith has the power to transmute your feelings of adversity into action that move you to success. As you develop your power of enthusiasm, you also develop your positive mental attitude. Enthusiasm acts on our subconscious mind the same way as positive mental attitude. It fills it with images, desires, and plans for success. It is part of what fuels the Law of Success.

Many positive effects occur as the result of controlled enthusiasm, the secret key#8 to the Law of Success. You will

    1. Increase the intensity of your thinking and imagination (the secret key to Law of Success # 10 – Think Accurately).
    2. Acquire a pleasing and convincing tone of voice (helps build a pleasing personality – of the secret key to Law of Success # 3).
    3. Reduce the drudgery in your work.
    4. Have a more attractive personality (the secret key to Law of Success # 3).
    5. Gain self-confidence.
    6. Strengthen your mental and physical health.
    7. Build your personal initiative.
    8. Overcome physical and mental fatigue more easily.
    9. Spread your enthusiasm to others. (the secret key to Law of Success # 12).

Enthusiasm needs to be developed and channeled towards your goals. Control your enthusiasm says Hill, so that you don’t monopolize conversations, waste your precious fuel on wheels of chance or whiskey bottles, or reveal your ideas to competitors. You want to pour your enthusiasm into your definite purpose, which is key #1 in the secret key to Law of Success.

Here are Hill’s steps on How to Develop Controlled Enthusiasm, Key 8 in the secret key to Law of Success:

    1. Adopt a major purpose. (the secret key to Law of Success #1).
    2. Write out a clear statement of that purpose and your plan for attaining it. Include a statement of what you intend to give in return for its realization.
    3. Back your purpose with a burning desire. Fan that desire; coax it; let it become the dominating thought in your mind (enthusiasm helps fan your desire).
    4. Set to work immediately in carrying out your plan.
    5. Follow your plan accurately and persistently.
    6. If you are overtaken by defeat, study your plan carefully, and change it if necessary. Do not change it simply because you have met defeat.
    7. Ally yourself with others whose aid you need. (Masterminding is the secret Key to Law of Success # 2).
    8. Keep away from joy-killers and naysayers. Stick with the optimists.
    9. Never let a day pass without devoting some time to furthering your plan. You are developing enthusiasm as a habit, and habits require reinforcement.
    10. Keep yourself sold on the idea that you will obtain your definite major purpose, no matter how far way that moment seems. Autosuggestion is a powerful force in developing enthusiasm.
    11. Keep your mind positive at all times. Enthusiasm will not thrive in a field full of fear, envy, greed, jealousy, doubt, revenge, hatred, intolerance, and procrastination. It needs positive thought and action. (Secret Key to Law of Success # 7 Build a Positive Mental Attitude).

Enthusiasm and positive mental attitude relies upon and reinforces the principles that are crucial to personal achievement. Enthusiasm supports positive mental attitude. “The cultivation of success is a complex, organic process; whenever you advance in acting on one of its tenets, you advance in others” states Hill.
